Carl’s Philly Cheesesteak

Carl’s Philly Cheesesteak @ Yankee Stadium

According to my wife she’s been a hardcore Yankee fan since she was six years old. At the beginning of the season Yankee’s pitcher Mariano Rivera announced that he would be retiring this year. So when Mariano Rivera Bobblehead Night rolled around she wasn’t gonna miss it.

After entering the stadium I headed straight to Carl’s Steaks on field level. Having grown up in New Jersey, about half way between New York City and Philadelphia, I’ve come to love Philly cheesesteaks and I’ve definitely had my fair share.

From Carl’s website, “Carl’s authentic Philly Cheesesteaks start with thinly sliced sirloin steak grilled to perfection. We stay true to our cheesesteaks and offer the original “cheese whiz” or your choice of provolone or white american cheese with or without grilled onions. To top it off we use only the freshest hoagie roll that is fit to handle an authentic cheesesteak.”

I ordered mine with American cheese and no onions. Just a tip, if you don’t want a cheesesteak that’s been sitting under the hot lights order it without onions. They will cook up a fresh one for you so it’s worth the wait.

I topped my cheesesteak with some ketchup and took my first bite. The thinly sliced sirloin steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The beautifully melted white American cheese was smooth and creamy while the meat to cheese ratio was ideal. The bread was the right size for its contents, soft, fresh and did not fall apart.

This cheesesteak is outstanding and definitely rivals the best cheesesteaks from Philladelphia. Next time you’re in Yankee Stadium make sure your first stop is Carl’s Steaks.

Cookie Dough Cupcake @ Baked by Melissa

I proposed to my wife in May of 2010 on The High Line. The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Lucky for me my then fiancée said yes. Afterwards we walked along 14th street and noticed a store called Baked by Melissa. They had the cutest little cupcakes on display. We tried a dozen and have been hooked ever since.

I like to surprise my wife with a half dozen of these cupcakes every so often because they remind me of that night, and if I’m lucky she will let me have one! Her current favorite is the Cookie Dough cupcake.

According to Baked by Melissa “Our cupcakes are bite-size! They are 1-2 bites each, and are slightly larger than the diameter of a quarter.”

Every time I see these cupcakes I am amazed at how small they really are. I can easily eat one in a single bite but I force myself to take two bites to savor them. The Cookie Dough cupcake is a perfect combination of yellow cake, cookie dough filling, chocolate icing, and a cookie dough topping. The yellow cake is moist without being oily. The cookie dough is perfectly sweetened with a slightly granular texture and tiny chocolate chips. The icing is dark chocolate and contrasts superbly with the sweetness of the cookie dough.

These cupcakes are awesome! At just under 50 calories each these will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth without sabotaging your diet.

The Burger

The Burger @ Good Enough to Eat

I met up with an old friend for lunch today and we decided to go to my wife’s favorite brunch spot, Good Enough to Eat. It’s conveniently located in my neighborhood, Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

I usually go to Good Enough to Eat for Sunday brunch and have their superb cinnamon swirl french toast. This was my second time there for lunch and my first lunch since they moved to their new location. After checking out the menu I decided to go with “The Burger”. It’s described as “8 oz. of our blend of ground beef on a pepper roll with French fries, lettuce, tomato and pickle … with jalapeño jack, sharp cheddar, gruyère, mozzarella, blue or goat cheese”. I ordered mine with jalapeño jack cheese cooked medium.

When my order arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see that the burger was even bigger than I expected. The toppings were presented on the side along with the pickle and fries and everything looked very appetizing. I put it all together by adding the ketchup first then layering on the lettuce, tomato and red onion. Biting into the burger my taste buds were met with a prominent and delicious smoky flavor. The beef was juicy and tasty but could have benefited from a bit more seasoning. The perfectly melted jalapeño jack cheese complimented the flavor of the beef well without overpowering it. The pepper roll was the proper size for the beef patty. It was lightly toasted, soft and did not fall apart. Overall a tasty burger that I definitely look forward to enjoying again.

If you’re in the city and find yourself craving a burger you owe it your yourself to try this one.

Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies

As luck would have it I had to travel to Rosslyn, Virginia for work this week …… on Labor Day of all days! The building I work in has a Safeway food store in it. Since my employer dropped the ball and didn’t provide lunch as they promised I stopped in to buy a sandwich for lunch.

Being a life long food junky I can’t seem to stay out of the candy, cookie and ice cream aisles. With autumn right around the corner the tastes of the season are showing up on store shelves now. I have always loved all things pumpkin (except pumpkin pie). When I saw the Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Cheesecake cookies on the shelf I knew right then that I wasn’t leaving the store without them.

Pepperidge Farm describes these cookies as “moist, soft cookies made with real pumpkin, cheesecake flavored drops, brown sugar and spices”.

Upon opening the package I was greeted with the robust and inviting aroma of pumpkin and spice. The cookie has a rich pumpkin orange color with just the right amount of off white cream cheese chunks. As I bit into the cookie I found it to be very soft with a chewy texture, the pumpkin and spices are perfectly balanced.  The cream cheese chunks didn’t seem to impart any cream cheese flavor, however, they do taste like white chocolate. Their sweet taste is the perfect compliment to the spice. These cookies are addictive and it took all the will power I could muster to eat only two at a time.

If you are a pumpkin fan run out and get these now, they are limited edition!
